In this post, the authors outline the different models of open access publication and describe their rromeo package to access the API of the SHERPA/RoMEO database of open access policies of scientific journals. Having an R client to programmatically access the data would allow researchers to more easily select journals based on their manuscript archival policies, or help bibliometricians get a picture of open access practices in a particular subfield.
The authors had no prior experience with web technologies within R and they share resources they found helpful in developing an API package.
