In this occasional series, we interview someone using a loosely defined set of interview questions for the purpose of demystifying the creative and development processes of R community members. This interview was conducted and prepared by Kelly O’Briant as part of an rOpenSci unconf17 project.

Karthik Ram is a Data Scientist at the Berkeley Institute for Data Science and Berkeley Institute for Global Change Biology. He is a co-founder of rOpenSci, a collective to support the development of R-based tools which facilitate open science and access to open data. In this interview, Karthik and I discuss the birth of rOpenSci, tools and life hacks for staying sane while managing the constant stress of work fires and the importance of saying no.

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask but is it possible to add questions to these interviews as in https://usesthis.com/interviews ?

  • What hardware do you use?
  • And what software?
  • What would be your dream setup?

I think it will be interesting to see the other tools that R community members use.

Great place to ask.

The current set of interviews was all done at once at unconf17 so no opportunity to add new questions to these.

We’ve been thinking of doing another kind of interview series where we ask people about their workflows. Maybe the questions you suggest could be part of that. I agree - I think lots of people would be interested to see the other tools that R community members use.
